Certification requirements

Designing and implementing your OHSMS — hazard identification, risk assessment, policies and procedures — is your organization's responsibility, done internally or with a consultant of your choosing, and happens before the independent certification audit described below. ISO 45001 is compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and many organizations certify it as part of an integrated management system.

How certification works

Stage 1 audit

A documentation and readiness review against ISO 45001:2018.

Stage 2 audit

An audit of your OHSMS in operation, on-site or remote where applicable.

Certification decision

A decision maker independent of the audit team decides whether to certify, in line with ISO/IEC 17021-1.

Annual surveillance and the three-year cycle

Certificates are valid three years, with annual surveillance audits and a full recertification audit at the end of the cycle.

Remote and on-site audits

Stage 1, Stage 2 and surveillance audits can be delivered remotely, on-site, or blended, per IAF MD 4 guidance — though many OH&S audits benefit from an on-site element given the physical hazards involved; we'll agree the right mix with you.
