Remote ISO Certification Audits

A remote audit, also known as a virtual audit, is a method of conducting an audit using information and communication technology (ICT) — such as video conferencing, screen-sharing, email and telephone — to gather audit evidence without an auditor being physically on site.

CCI conducts remote audits in accordance with IAF MD 4 (the IAF Mandatory Document for the Use of Information and Communication Technology for Auditing/Assessment Purposes). The decision to use remote techniques, and the extent to which they are used, is assessed on a case-by-case basis — taking into account the client's processes, the applicable standard, data security and confidentiality, and whether the audit objectives can be reliably achieved without an on-site presence. Some audit activities may still require an on-site visit.

Whether conducted remotely or on-site, the overall aim is to evaluate audit evidence objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria have been fulfilled.

Our remote auditing process allows our auditors to review documentation, conduct interviews and carry out site tours using technology. Remote audit activities can be co-witnessed by multiple stakeholders within your organization, who can interact with auditors via a live video link.

Which standards can be audited remotely?

Most ISO management-system standards we certify — including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 27001 — can use a remote or blended audit approach where IAF MD 4 criteria are met. Standards involving significant physical hazard or product inspection (for example ISO 45001 or ISO 22000) more often need an on-site element; we'll confirm the right mix when we scope your certification.

Is a remote audit less rigorous than an on-site audit? No — the same audit criteria and evidence requirements apply; remote techniques change how evidence is gathered, not the standard it's assessed against.

Can our whole certification — Stage 1, Stage 2 and surveillance — be remote? Often yes, subject to IAF MD 4 criteria and the nature of your scope. Some organizations use a blended approach, e.g. a remote Stage 1 and an on-site Stage 2.

What do we need for a remote audit? A reliable internet connection, video-conferencing capability, and access to the documentation and personnel the audit plan requires — we'll confirm technical requirements before scheduling.
